Indian sculptures: Art of Love

Reality is quite different from imagination. If someone wants to interpret something then he should have come across the reality. We can imagine things when we have  conceptions in our mind. Realism exists in our mind and imagination is the creativity of our mind. To prove this, I am going to write on Indian sculptures. Usually, people states that sculptures are the imagination of artisans. If they are the imagination of artisans then humans are most superior in this world.

How humans could imagine to such extent that they have created masterpieces of female Goddesses and Gods? Their art and creativity made us speechless. Sculptures depicting sex, intimacy, art of love in Khajuraho temples, Padawali, Konarak/Lingaraj etc. compel us to think about our Indian history. Artisans were shaping clay models when they were having sex or they were posing while sex. Is it so?

But for sure this could not be the imagination of artisans. Realism exists that’s why we draw our attention to sculptures. We cannot deny the creativity of artisans. Sculptures were the favored medium of artistic expression on the Indian subcontinent. The nude was used both to represent the body as a symbol of spirit and to reveal the imagined shapes of God. The presentation of nudity in these sculptures left us amazed. So yes our ancestors were pretty cool about sexual orientations. Some of the Indian sculptures which left us amazed are:-

  1. Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh

  1. Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh

The various scenes of passionate love making, in acrobatic postures strike viewers. The postures of love making depicting erotic art left us surprised. We are compelled to think this was prevalent in Hindu tradition. Sculptures in the temple draw our attention towards them.  Look out for the bold panels of multiple partners engaged with each other. We can see female figurines are cloth less. They haven’t worn anything on their body and the woman with the head on the floor is actually touching the vagina of the woman left to her for sexual pleasure.

  1. Markandeshwar Temple, Maharashtra

Markandeshwar Temple, Maharashtra

The Markandeshwar temple complex near the naxal district of Gadchiroli, by the River Wainganga, showcases a sprinkling of erotic art. A couple performing ‘fellacio’ will raise the eyebrows of viewers. It is known to be built by danavas (evil forces) in one night; the temple is made from stone, and follows Hemadpanth architecture. In above sculpture, a couple is engaged in oral sex.  Oral sex was  performed that time and then it is passed through legacy. People watch porn today read articles to learn different postures of sex why don’t we learn from our ancestors. Today if we discuss sex openly it would be a crime. It is so difficult to understand what people want. However, if we are going to compare our past with present then it’s very clear our past is more forward and advanced.  In Ancient India women don’t cover their breasts. Couples were allowed to try any posture of sex. Contemporary pornography is banned in our country. Women are forced to cover their bodies otherwise they are responsible for rapes and crimes towards them.

3.Padawali Temple, Madhya Pradesh

In Morena district near the Chambal Valley, lays the fortress of Padawali. The temple inside has earned the reputation being a ‘Mini Khajuraho‘ due to the prevalence of erotic art. The difference between big brother Khajuraho and Padawali Temple, is that the erotic art here seems less acrobatic and more ‘real life’ and ‘doable’. The carvings of maithunas in various positions, ranging from simple to difficult almost brings the Kamasutra to life.

The erotic love depicting by sculptures is speechless. It all depends on us how we accept this love making.
